Istanbul’s
Toy Museum
Turkish Poet and Author - Sunay Akin opened
his Toy Museum on the 23rd April 2005. One of the most
important days in the Turkish calendar:- National Sovereignty & Children’s
Day.
This four floor, historical villa, located
in Göztepe, on the Asian side of Istanbul, was once
the family home of Sunay Akin. It is has, now been turned
into one of the most enchanting Toy Museums in the world,
with toys dating back to the 17th Century.
The oldest is a miniature violin manufactured
in France in the year 1817. Also part of this extensive
collection is a doll made in the USA from the 1820’s,
a set of marbles also from the US dating back to the 1860’s
and tin toys from Germany
The interior decor of this charming museum
were arranged by stage designer Ayhan Dogan, and each room
resembles a different theater stage. You can gaze at the
stars shining above you when you enter the gallery of space
toys – walk through a genuine train compartment,
to see the miniature train sets, and relax in the cafe
where antique dolls, dollhouses and miniature furniture
are displayed on the walls.
